Great Circle Routes

Problems arise when trying to represent a three dimensional object such as the Earth on a two dimensional plane such as a conventional flat map.

For instance, an aircraft flying from London to New York by the shortest possible route would appear to follow an arc of a circle, rather than a straight line.
